When the Learning Never Stops
The power of effective communication—is Navneet Bajaj’s biggest takeaway after more than two decades as the Managing Director and Chief Experience Officer (CXO) of Sudarshan Paper & Board Pvt. Ltd., one of the oldest paper merchants and paper converting companies in East India. In our August issue, he shares the secrets to unlocking successful communication, and why it’s important to embrace learning as a lifelong process.
So, Mr Bajaj, could you tell us a little bit about your company?
We, Sudarshan Paper & Board Pvt. Ltd. (SPB), are unrivalled market leaders in the paper trading industry in East India, with key connections in other regions as well. Some of the market segments we cover include writing, printing, packaging boards, B2C copier paper, and industrial- and specialty-grade paper. Whether a customer is looking for premier printing paper, exquisite specialty paper, or innovative packaging solutions, they will find it at SPB.
We hear you’re a second-generation paper merchant… And that you view the business as something beyond merely selling paper!
That’s right. As a modern day CXO, I effectively take charge of the entire executive and financial affairs of the company, providing the vision and guiding the team. A big part of my work revolves around making sure the processes and work systems are streamlined and in sync with the latest technologies and trends.
On top of providing world-class paper solutions, we also pride ourselves on redefining the art of paper trading, and establishing ourselves as the trusted choice for discerning clientele seeking results that are nothing short of perfection. It may be a bold claim to make, but I can confidently say that SPB Group has been one of the leading organisations to set new benchmarks for customer satisfaction and vendor partnerships. From fostering reliable partnerships over the decades, we are able to lay down new standards for our extensive repertoire, while at the same time meticulously crafting our service systems to ensure unparalleled time-tested customer experience and faith for each product.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Well…it’s definitely the warmth of working closely with people day in, day out. In this line, we are exposed to all kinds of B2B and B2C brands and industry leaders. It’s a continuous learning experience. In the paper trading industry, with its rich heritage and long-standing tradition, I find enjoyment in the versatility it offers across diverse markets. The opportunity to unleash creativity through unique paper products and printing techniques is truly rewarding. Moreover, witnessing tangible results in beautifully printed materials and carefully crafted packaging brings a sense of accomplishment. I appreciate the industry’s increasing focus on environmental consciousness and sustainable practices. Being a part of this dynamic field enables me to contribute to both tradition and innovation simultaneously.
As a leader, do you have any tips on how to manage an organisation?
The key to effective leadership lies in one’s core understanding of human psychology. After all, we are individuals with our own thoughts, dreams, preferences and dislikes. I believe that in striving to understand everyone—colleagues, suppliers, customers, and service partners alike—we can uplift the company morale through successful communication, and secure a win-win situation at all times. The right team with the right motivation is instrumental in locking down professional harmony among associates, as well as the right business partnerships. It’s a constant endeavour on my part to provide able leadership through an active learning process in order to accelerate positive transformation within the organisation.
Has PaperOne contributed to SPB’s vision?
Definitely. We’re delighted to be in business with a key partner like PaperOne. Our partnership is a love story that has blossomed over more than a decade. PaperOne is known for being a progressive company that promotes learning through association, giving immense respect to its trade partners, and working ethically with trust and clarity. All of this is in line with SPB’s objectives, as PaperOne fuels our paper trading business by consistently delivering superior quality products, meeting dynamic demands, and ensuring uninterrupted supply.
Its competitive pricing and flexible terms bolster our financial performance, enabling our compelling value propositions. Impeccable customer service and understanding of our unique requirements also foster collaborative problem-solving. In short, PaperOne’s invaluable support fortifies our competitive advantage, driving unmatched excellence in our business.
We love knowing that we’ve helped our customers to achieve their business goals!
Because of PaperOne, our brand image is positively impacted, providing expertise through training which we use down the line, expanded offerings, and enhanced customer perception. It helps to set us apart from competitors by offering a unique value proposition, providing high-quality products and after-sales service, and focusing on customer satisfaction. This allows us to remain ahead of competition in our go-to-market strategy through an organisational approach to business and use of technology. More importantly, we’re able to contribute to a more sustainable future.
On that note, let’s circle back to what you were saying earlier on environmental consciousness…
Being equally committed to innovation and sustainability, PaperOne gives us a competitive advantage as customers relish being part of a responsible supply chain. In the lively world of paper trading, where endless possibilities await, PaperOne offers a diverse range of paper products, from classics to specialties, catering to every need. Through this like-minded association, we’ve had the opportunity to learn about the latest global trends in the paper and paperboard industry. Sustainability is one such leading trend. Together with PaperOne, we champion sustainability, offering sustainable options and supporting environmental initiatives. Guided by market trends and innovative technologies, we forge strong relationships to unleash the creative power of paper.
Do you think this is a key trend for the future of the paper and pulp industry?
Yes. In the digitalisation era, paper manufacturers must embrace sustainability and develop products to meet the growing demand for environmentally conscious solutions. Moving forward, plastic substitution and packaging will be key drivers for the future of our industry. Diversifying into specialised paper products such as packaging and labelling can open up new market opportunities. Integrating digital technologies throughout their operations can optimise production processes and enhance efficiency. Collaborating with technology partners and researchers also fosters innovation, keeping companies at the forefront of industry advancements.
A customer-centric approach is essential, namely one that focuses on understanding and meeting the specific needs of customers through customised solutions. Some other key strategies include exploring new sectors and markets, investing in research and development, optimising supply chain management, and leveraging digital channels for customer engagement. Adapting to changing market dynamics and proactively embracing innovation will position paper manufacturers for long-term success in the digitalisation era.
We’re glad to be able to support your company’s vision of sustainability and innovation! What are your thoughts on the future of the partnership between SPB and PaperOne?
Without a doubt, we’re going from strength to strength! Through enhancing communication channels, establishing long-term contracts for a stable supply chain, collaborating with suppliers to roll out innovative solutions, prioritising shared sustainability goals, exploring strategic growth opportunities, conducting regular performance evaluations, as well as developing B2C channel distribution—I believe the partnership between SPB and PaperOne can only get stronger over time, as we empower each other to thrive in the market. I’m very excited about the collaborative partnership that we now have, and to see it evolve and adapt to the changing landscape of our industry, driving mutual success in the future.
We’re excited for the same, Mr Bajaj! Thank you for giving us this opportunity to gain such invaluable insights into the industry, and we look forward to many more years of successful partnership with SPB
